SACRAMENTO – Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (R-Yuba City) issued the following statement on the recent reports released by the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) showing that Governor Newsom’s budget surplus spending is ineffective and unsustainable. “The Governor’s newly revised budget completely missed the mark for what Californians need most right now and the LAO agrees that his priorities are downright irresponsible. “Not only did the LAO confirm what Republicans have been saying for months that the most effective way to help curb the cost of gas is by suspending the…
SACRAMENTO - Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City) released the following statement on Newsom’s Inflation Relief Package:  “Newsom specializes in grand announcements and flashy sounding proposals, but he rarely follows through with effective solutions that actually help California families. “Democrat-rule has made this state unaffordable and has driven inflation higher. With a $68 billion budget surplus, the Governor should be doing more to lower costs. Groceries, housing and energy prices are sky-high now, but his plan won’t provide relief until late summer. “As…
SACRAMENTO - Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City) released the following statement on Joe Biden's inflation remarks:  “Joe Biden is taking a page straight from the Gavin Newsom playbook, deflecting and blaming everyone else for his policy failures. "American families are paying an extra $536 every month due to 40-year-high inflation. Paychecks are getting smaller, bills are piling up and people want answers. They want the cost of gas, groceries and goods to go down. But especially here in California, Democrat one-party rule won’t allow it. They’ve blocked Republican…
Provides Immediate Relief to Struggling Californians SACRAMENTO - Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City) issued the following statement on the Bi-Partisan Problem Solvers Caucus proposal to immediately suspend California’s gas tax for 12 months:  “Republicans have been leading the charge to suspend the 51-cent-per-gallon gas tax and we’re finally seeing some progress. It’s past time that we help the millions of Californians who are barely able to keep their head above water because of our sky-high inflation and record-high gas prices. “This bi-partisan effort needs to…
Apparently the highest gas prices in the country aren’t high enough for Capitol Dems SACRAMENTO – Democrats have acknowledged they will miss a key deadline to delay a $500 million gas tax increase set for July 1. Despite inflation at a 40-year high and gas prices $1.55 above the national average, Democrats’ inaction means Californians will be paying even more for their commutes this summer.  “This is pathetic – Democrats have pretty much given up on providing relief to struggling Californians,” said Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City). “Regular people are having to make…
If the recent shooting outside the Capitol isn’t the wake-up call Democrats need, what is? The Sacramento Bee just had a great writeup of Republicans’ call for tougher sentences for gun and gang crimes, an end to California’s expanded early release program and stiffer penalties for felons in possession of a firearm. Thanks to California’s overly generous early release program, Sacramento shooting suspect Smiley Martin was out of prison after serving less than half of his 10-year sentence for brutally assaulting his girlfriend.  It’s time to start putting victims first. Dangerous felons need…
SACRAMENTO - Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City) issued the following statement on the release of Consumer Price Index data showing inflation hit 8.5% in March, the highest level since 1981:  “How much worse does inflation need to get before Democrats get serious about helping California workers afford the basics? It’s been more than a month since Governor Newsom promised relief from high gas prices, but Californians are still struggling to fill their tanks and afford their groceries. Californians need action, not more empty words.”
More than a month after the Governor promised relief from high gas prices during his State of the State speech, his proposal is finally in print, and it’s underwhelming to say the least.  In his splashy announcement video, he said Californians would get $400 per registered vehicle. But apparently that memo didn’t get to the folks writing his proposal, who didn’t even bother to include a dollar amount for the rebate or the total cost of the program.  There’s also a cap on the value of vehicles eligible for the rebate, but we don’t know what it is, because that’s blank too.  Oh, and the best…
Law Enforcement and Victim Advocates Join Call for Stiffer Sentences for Gun, Gang Crimes and End to Early Release of Violent Felons SACRAMENTO – Today, in the wake of a gang shootout that claimed six lives just blocks from the Capitol, Assembly Republicans joined law enforcement representatives and victim advocates to call for stiffer sentences for gun and gang crimes and an end to California’s early release policies that allowed one of the alleged shooters out of prison after serving just a fraction of a 10-year sentence for violently assaulting his girlfriend.    “The violence we saw last…
SACRAMENTO - Today, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City) issued the following statement on the report that one of the suspects in the Sacramento shooting had been released early from prison despite prosecutors’ efforts to keep him behind bars:  “This was a violent felon with a long rap sheet who should have been in prison. If he was, this tragedy might have been avoided. If this violence a few blocks from the Capitol doesn’t serve as a wake-up call to the policymakers in this building, I don’t know what will.”
