Newsom’s Energy Experts: Gas Storage Mandate Could Cause Shortages, Increase Prices

SACRAMENTO – This week the Governor introduced another half-baked proposal in his campaign to “hold big oil accountable” by putting new storage requirements on refineries. This proposal is so rushed that Newsom is threatening to call a special session if the Legislature doesn’t pass it right away.

Newsom claims his bill will reduce gas prices and protect against supply shocks. In reality (a place Newsom seems to know little about), this policy will make things even worse. But don’t take our word for it: Newsom’s own energy commission said it could “create shortages” and “increase average prices.”

Instead of tackling the real culprits – high taxes and expensive mandates – Newsom keeps pushing his reckless policies that have failed Californians time and time again.

While the Governor is focused on shifting blame from his bad policies, Republicans will continue to push back against the real causes of high gas prices and fight to make our state more affordable for all.
