AB 2020 would, for counties that opt-in, create an alternate definition of “gravely disabled” which is used to evaluate the need to establish a Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act conservatorship. This would help ensure that individual suffering from serious mental illness, especially those who are incapable of understanding the negative impacts of their illness, do not continue to deteriorate without the treatment and support they desperately need.
